Solid oak Ledge and Brace doors are the perfect addition to country cottages, traditional rural homes & barn conversions.
Ledge and brace doors are sometimes also referred to as barn doors or cottage doors (or brace and ledge or ledged and braced). From the outside all you can see looking at the door is the clean vertical lines of the oak boards. However, looking at the other side of the door we can clearly see the traditional style of the inverted ‘Z’ shapes that are made by having the 3 horizontal ‘ledges’ and the 2 diagonal ‘braces’.
In some ledge and brace doors there can be just two horizontal planks/ledges and one diagonal brace which creates just one inverted ‘Z’ shape. However, a ledge and brace door made from solid oak should really have 3 ledges for the additional strength that this gives.
The ledge and brace strips of wood (solid oak) are attached to a number of vertical planks. The construction of this style of door is very sturdy indeed. All oak ledge and brace doors shown are made using traditional tongue and groove construction with a beaded profile.
Many people will use T hinges on ledge and brace doors, however, regular butt hinges can be used just as well.
Ledge and brace doors remain a hugely popular choice for barn conversions, country homes and cottages. They really ooze charm and character and can be the perfect finishing touch in a renovation project, particularly if paired with complementary hand forged ironmongery or door furniture.
Another significant feature of these doors is the greater flexibility they allow with bespoke sizes for unusual sized door frames. If you have an unusual sized door frame or space for a door, then the ledge and brace style is a fantastic solution as you can trim so much more from the top and bottom of this door style than most other solid oak doors.
